Greece is set to launch a voluntary conscription program for women starting in 2026. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced that the first phase of the new program will establish a volunteer unit of 100 to 150 women.
Dendias stated that their goal is to strengthen the connection between women and the military, creating a structure where they can serve on equal footing with men. This will involve establishing new facilities and initiating a cultural transformation within the military.
Women have been able to serve in the Greek Armed Forces since 1998, but this initiative marks the country’s first official voluntary conscription program specifically for women.
